For a number of years, Lundbeckfonden established Centres of Excellence focusing on subjects within biomedical or natural sciences determined by the Board of Trustees.
The five-year funding module comprised an amount between DKK 25-100 million, and further funding beyond this amount and time frame could not be expected.
The applications were evaluated in two stages: First, the Foundation invited declarations of interest. After review, a small number of groups were asked to submit a full application. Ad hoc international evaluation panels consisting of the Foundation’s Center Committee and a majority of independent external experts - typically from Sweden and Norway - were established to evaluate both the declaration of interest and the full applications.
The Foundation established research centers in Neuroscience in 2005, Quantum Systems Research 2006, Translational Science in Clinical Medicine in 2007, Interventional Research in Clinical Medicine in 2008 and Nanomedicine in 2009.
